Paying Zakat in Advance
According to the majority of scholars, to alleviate the current coronavirus crisis, Zakat may be paid before its due date (although some scholars have set additional conditions). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) permitted Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) to pay Zakat in advance (narrated by Tirmidhi).
Based on this, we can say that it is permissible to pay Zakat before its due time. However, the following points should be considered:
- A person's wealth must reach the Nisab threshold one lunar year after the advance payment is made. In other words, when paying Zakat in advance, one must estimate that their wealth will remain at or above the Nisab level at the time of the actual due date.
- The amount paid in advance will be counted as Zakat for the upcoming year. If the actual Zakat due is less than what was paid, the excess should be taken back or adjusted for the following year.
- If a person pays Zakat in advance and then their wealth decreases below the Nisab by the actual due date, they are not required to pay additional Zakat, but the amount already given is still considered valid charity.
It should also be noted that paying Zakat in advance is a concession (rukhsah), not an obligation. It is permissible when there is a genuine need, such as during a crisis, or when it is more beneficial for the recipients to receive the funds earlier.
For example, during a natural disaster or economic hardship, it may be better to distribute Zakat funds as soon as possible rather than waiting for the exact due date. This is consistent with the spirit of Zakat, which aims to help those in need in a timely manner.
Nevertheless, it is always best to calculate one's Zakat properly and pay it on time. If paying in advance, one should do so with careful estimation and preferably consult with knowledgeable scholars.
